Reflected Red Line with Zinnia

8x10 Original Oil
O.K. This is a definite nod, if not an outright theft, to one of my favorite painters, Aaron Liefferth. His colors are always vibrant and almost vibrate with life. He does this type of thing really well. I just had to try it. I have a loooong way to go.

These are so fun to paint. The colors just make me feel good!

The Elegant Marsh

8x10 Original Oil
This one is also for the CAC auction. It is a familiar view from my dear friend Anne's Kiawah property. This time I decided to play with perspective an include the close up planter instead of just the distant view which is what I usually do.

Summer Shack

I took a photo of this in Southold, NY when I was driving up the North Fork of Long Island with my sister Mary. I finally got around to painting it this summer. Its just such a quintessential North Fork scene. This one will be on auction on our Charleston Artist Collective site. The proceeds from our sales go to a local charity every month. So, I can't put it up for sale here. I just wanted to post it so you could have a look!

Shady Path

I loved the way the light peeked in and highlighted these majestic palms on a rustic Kiawah path. We saw two alligaters and 1 snake on this eventful painting expedition.

Hunting Island Boneyard

I love this place. It has a rustic beauty that is enhanced by the dead "ghost of trees" that remain from severe erosion. Sadly this spot which I painted last year is not even there anymore.

Kiawah Creek

I have painted this little creek so many times I cant count. I tried a different technique this time and I like the results. A flat brush and lots of quick strokes. It was done in 30 minutes.

The colors of this sunrise looked almost dreamlike peeking through the trees. This was the view from our window of the guestroom at Allen and Lotta's in Jackson. Nice.

"Spring at Magnolia Gardens" 8x10 framed $250

Loved being at Magnolia Gardens with Anne and Mary. We thought we were going to get rained on any minute but managed to capture the bursting colors of spring before the deluge.

"Ruth's House" 9x12 framed $275

Everyone knows Ruth's house where we live. Her yard is overflowing with color and life, especially in the summer. I picked a shady spot under a tree and really enjoyed working on this painting.

"The Boathouse" 8x10 $250 framed

This old abandoned boathouse has intrigued me for years. It sits so peacefully at the edge of the water. At high tide it actually sits surrounded by water like a little island. I painted it around the time I lost my Mom so it has a lot of meaning for me which I continue to contemplate.

The Sullivan's Island Plein Air Painters

These are some of my favorite painters as well as friends. Inspired by the healing forces of art, nature, playfulness and laughter, the Sullivan's Island Plein Aire Painters began painting together to capture the lusty beauty of the lowcountry. Collectively, we support the creative process while encouraging each other's own unique and individual expression through painting. We choose to paint almost exclusively outdoors in order to capture the effects of light and atmosphere through color, a practice which demonstrates a commitment to the plein-air process. Through the years we have formed an enduring friendship while braving heat, mosquitos, and even snakes! We show our work in one of the large windows at Saks Fifth Ave. located on King st. in Charleston. We are in a window on the Market st. side. Come check out our work! Their links are posted at right.

Summer Beach Path 8X10 unframed $250.00

This path always speaks to me. As you will see, I continue to paint there throughout the year. In every season, a different kind of beauty with luscious textures and dancing light and shadows.

Playful Tree 22X33

not for sale

I did this at a painting workshop with the fantastic Kiawah painting group. It is unlike anything I have ever tried. It was such a different and exciting experience to paint. Normally, I focus on the subject and all my energy generates from "outside." With this it all came from emotion; all from inside. It was such a great discovery process and so much fun to play!

Sunflowers and Teapot 16X20 $375 unframed

I painted this recently with Anne in her kitchen. The sunlight just poured through the window onto these lovely sunflowers. I don't think I spent more thatn 1 1/2 hours on this. It came together very quickly.

Kiawah Stillife 8X22

sold
This is one of the first paintings that I began feeling free enough to be a little abstract. The sun was hitting the subject so beautifully. It just felt like such a waste of time to labor over making the peripheral objects (couch and table)look exact. I decided to just barely suggest them and focus on the onions, pear...and those beautiful shadows.

Fruit Cabinet 22X36

NFS
This was one of the first paintings I did when I took up painting again 12 years ago. It is so "tight." I can't believe I ever enjoyed painting like this. My work has really loosened up over the years to the point of being very abstract (as in the painting titled "Rythym" on this blog. The act of painting expressively is much more enjoyable and, I think, more interesting. This painting is not for sale for two reasons: 1) My son has asked to have it and, 2) I painted it from the cover of a Potterry Barn catalog and I think it would be illegal to sell it!

On the Road to Annecy 8X10 NFS

This was painted a while ago but it is one of my favorites. It was painted from a photograph I took while driving in France. We passed it on the way to Annecy, one of the most charming towns in the Alps. We passed it and it struck me that it would make a beautiful painting. After about 20 minutes, I couldnt get it out my mind so we had to go back and photograph it. I'm so glad I did.

"Rythym" 8X10 framed not for sale

This was my first attempt at abstract painting. I found the process to be completly different from more representational painting. It was a great experience to play with shapes and colors to express emotion.

Reeds Along the Path 8X10 unframed $150.00

This way the reeds dispayed their colors and reached up to the sun reminded me of a Monet scene.

The Garden Sink 8X10 framed $275

This was painted on one of the first days of summer at my Anne's. We have painted this green bottle countless times. I love the way the sunlight finters through the glass.

Blue bowl with Onions 14X16 unframed $450

I painted this painting at a workshop with Ian Roberts in Canada with 2 of my favorite painting buddies, Leslie and Anne, (missed you Mary). The workshop focused on composition and although it was most enjoyable and I learned alot, it was an exercize in patience. I did 12 drawing before Ian Ok 'd my composition. Very different from my usual style of "jumping right in!"
