Spring Bouquet
First Rose
Pansies Against Bamboo
Camillias
This one went a little abstract but I like the way it turned out. The pitcher was actually back-lit but I didn't like the way the shadow looked in the front of the pitcher so I gave it may best shot at "creating" the shadow and made the light source look as though it was coming from the left. But, I didn't want to loose the cool sliver of bright yellow light on the back of the table so I left that. It probably doesn't make logical sense but...I like it.

Misty Trees
6x8 oil on panel
Available on www.charlestonartistcollective.org
The theme for the Charleston Artist Collective Group this month was, "Between the Fish and the Tree" which, quite honestly had me stumped since I rarely think of trees and fish in the same...thought. Merging the two ideas on one canvas just tangled up my brain in a knot! After a lot of struggle, I decided to just paint trees, which I love.

Abstract color study
9x12 original oil on canvas board
200.00
This was a great exercize. I'm not sure if you can see it but this painting is composed of about a hundred rectangles of subtle shades of different colors which gives it a sort of pixilated look. Each color/rectangle was studied in the landscape and then mixed separately (which, really...isnt that what we're always suppose to do?) It took about 4 hours! It really makes you see the gradation of colors, the intensity of colors, and all the different values. It was not meant to actually be a painting but I liked it so much, and it got so much positive feedback from the painting group, that I decided to post it for sale. Some smart person with a very good eye decided to buy it. I love that!

Floweres on My Mantle
11x14 original oil on foam board, 350.00
One of my clients gave me these beautiful roses. The backround is of my new glass tile fireplace. I love the contrast of colors and textures. Painting glass is always interesting. It amazes me how little you actually have to"paint" it to make it resemble glass. When you're painting impressionistically, its always a challenge to have the object read as glass without looking too realistic. I was pretty happy with this one. There is room for improvement though.

Island Light
9x12 original oil unframed SOLD
I have driven by this little shack aobut 500 times on the island and everytime I say: "I really want to paint that." Wednesday our painting group set up right beside it and I finally did it. The light was perfect that day. I struggled with it for about 3o minutes and seriously thought I had forgotten how to paint altogether. Somehow I pulled it together and tried to be very present with what I loved about the scene: the pale yellow light, the shape of the trees, the many shades of green. It finally worked and came together very quickly. I am happy with the results.
If it doesnt sell on the blog, I will put it in the Island Gallery but with commission and frame it will be at least twice this price. ouch!

Lowcountry Thunderstorm

In the lowcountry, you can almost set your watch by the summer thunderstorms. This was so much fun to paint. Its big, for me anyway...18x24. I listened to Natalie Merchant and painted all afternoon. This will be in our Charleston Artists Collective Show on October 21th. I might work on it a little more.
Sally's Yard
View From the Shade

This was painted at the Vanderhorst Mansion on Kiawah Island. The setting is phenomenal. A formal-ish garden amidst the natural beauty of a lowcountry marsh. There is a pool there too but I opted to edit it out. The majestic palms complete the view...from the shade.

Self-Portrait I

When Allison told us we all neede to paint a self-portrait for the Artist Collective website, we all cringed. Its a little like doing therapy...on yourself. What an interesting challenge. I ended up doing two. This is the first one which I think looks really"professional." That makes sense because I painted it from a "professional" photgraph that I have on my therapy website. The second one is very different.

Self-Portrait II

This one is very different dont you think? Its much more relaxed and playful. Maybe this is the "artist me" and the other one is the "therapist me". Of course they are both me! Hummm...maybe I should work on integrating the two in both art and therapy...and in life! Or maybe it is just really late and I need to go to sleep.

Reflected Red Line with Zinnia
The Elegant Marsh
Summer Shack

I took a photo of this in Southold, NY when I was driving up the North Fork of Long Island with my sister Mary. I finally got around to painting it this summer. Its just such a quintessential North Fork scene. This one will be on auction on our Charleston Artist Collective site. The proceeds from our sales go to a local charity every month. So, I can't put it up for sale here. I just wanted to post it so you could have a look!
